Description
Just outside Vail, about a 25-minute drive, this guided 2-hour afternoon ATV tour takes you into the wide-open spaces of Camp Hale. This area holds a unique historical significance as the training ground for the 10th Mountain Division. Today, it’s one of the best spots around to experience the real Colorado backcountry.
When you arrive, your guide will get you geared up and walk you through everything you need to know. Even if you’ve never been on an ATV before, rest assured, the instructions are straightforward to follow. You’ll get comfortable in your vehicle before heading out onto the trail. Drivers need to be at least 16 with a valid license, and kids 5 and up can ride as passengers.
Once you’re on the trail, get ready for a visual treat. It doesn’t take long for the views to open up. You’ll pass through open meadows and forest roads, following easy but fun terrain. On clear days, you can spot Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive—the two highest peaks in Colorado—along with four different mountain ranges and the Continental Divide stretching across the horizon.
Your guide will make a few stops along the way for photos and to share a bit about the area’s history. It’s a relaxed pace, with time to take it all in. The air feels crisp, the pine trees smell amazing, and the quiet up there has a way of sticking with you.
By the time you roll back into base, you’ll be dusty, smiling, and glad you spent the afternoon exploring a part of Colorado most visitors never see.
